The U.S. Flag code states that, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Thus, when a flag is torn and tattered beyond repair, it’s time for it to be retired.
On Flag Day, Thursday Jun 14, the Ely American Legion will conduct a flag retirement ceremony and honorably retire unserviceable flags. The ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m. Community members are asked to bring flags in need of retirement to the Legion Hall on Flag Day and are invited to stay and observe the solemn ceremony.
