Auxiliary Flags<\/strong><\/span><\/u><\/b><\/div>\n

Our Ely American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit #555 placed 40 ALA Auxiliary Memorial Flags on past Ely ALA members in 8 local cemeteries for Memorial Day 2025.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u2002\u2002\u2002\u2002Cemeteries include:<\/u><\/b>\u00a0Rogers Grove, Ely Presbyterian, Buresh, Shueyville, Mount Vernon,<\/div>\n
\u2002\u2002\u2002\u2002Oakland (Solon), Cedar Memorial, Campbell (off Mt. Vernon Road), Murdoch-Linwood<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Flags were placed on Thursday, May 22, before Memorial Day during the rain breaks.\u00a0 On Wednesday, May 28, ALA members met at the Legion and carpooled out to the various cemeteries to retrieve the ALA flags.
\nOnce the flags were all retrieved, the group met at the Legion for social time with light snacks and refreshments.<\/div>\n

Ely American Legion Family Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Ely American Legion family offers three $555 scholarships for high school seniors.\u00a0 The application is open annually on January 2 (and closes March 31).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The online application allows students to provide information about their academic record, personal background, and extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Auxiliary members using a private, blind scoring process. Once the six award finalists are selected, the Ely American Legion Family will choose the three (3) final recipients. Each recipient will receive a one-time $555 scholarship.<\/p>\n

Scholarship recipients will be announced in mid-April, and the award will be sent directly to the winner.<\/p>\n

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Be a high school graduating senior, showing academic promise, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. Applicants are recommended to reside in Linn or an adjacent county.\u00a0 (Benton, Buchanan, Cedar, Delaware, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn)<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. Applicants must be <\/em>a child, sibling, grandchild, great-grandchild, niece, or nephew of a military service member. Details of an applicant’s service member relative should include the following: Name, Branch of Service, and Status of Service Member (deceased or living).<\/em>
    \n-or-<\/em>
    \nA person pursuing military service post-graduation without family ties to the military. These applicants must provide documentation of that status (official communication from the United States Government\/military)<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. What makes you the best candidate for this scholarship?\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n
  5. How do you see your future career helping your community?<\/em><\/li>\n
  6. Please list your community outreach, volunteer activities, and academic and non-academic honors.<\/em><\/li>\n
  7. What extracurricular activities or hobbies do you plan to participate in while in the military\/trade school\/college\/university?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The application process is strictly online.\u00a0 Include all sources of evidence:
    \n<\/b>1. A copy of your high school transcript.
    \n2. A copy of an upcoming fall academic schedule (screenshot is acceptable) OR a copy of a letter of acceptance.
    \n3. Two letter(s) of recommendation.<\/p>\n

    Fundraising<\/strong><\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n

    The Ely American Legion Auxiliary fundraises by selling special treats throughout the year.\u00a0 Let us do the prep work by preparing and baking cookies, and YOU can have quality time decorating!<\/p>\n

    Iowa Girls State (takes place annually in June)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    The 2026 Session of\u00a0American Legion Auxiliary Iowa Girls State\u00a0will be held June 14-19, 2026 at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa.\u00a0 For more information about this program visit\u00a0Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span>
