February Bags Winners!!

Once again returning champions were not able and defend their title and we have new winners at the Ely Legion. Congratulations to Stu and Adam for being our February Winners! The next event will be on March 7th and will be the final event of the season. Mark your calendars now to take your chance at being “The Best of the Best”.
The big winner again this month was the Linn County Veteran’s Food Bank. Thanks to all of our guests who brought with them items for the food bank. They asked if we could help out with toilet paper and peanut butter and we were able to drop off an amount that will keep them going for quite a while. Next month they are asking if we could provide canned meats (salmon, chicken, canned spam). Let’s see if we can fill their shelves!

Post History: Remembering St. Quentin Canal Vets

The St Quentin Post 555 gets its name from the Battle of St Quentin Canal in which two WW1 Soldiers from the Ely area died in action. Both PVT Charles Noska and PVT Joseph Dvorak were serving as part of the 30th Infantry Division when killed in action during October of 1918. Here are the draft cards of these two fallen veterans.

5th Grade Flag Essay Contest Winner

The winner of the Post 555’s American Legion Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest is Emily Crumbo. Emily is the daughter of Chris and Wendy Crumbo of Ely and a student at Prairie Creek Elementary School. Emily wrote an essay describing the history and the design of the United States flag that was very inspiring.

The purpose of the American Legion Fifth Grade Flag Essay Program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the United States Flag on the part of elementary-level students. The contest also allows contestants to gain a greater understanding of flag etiquette and respect for the flag.

Emily’s essay has been forwarded for district and state level competition. Congratulations and good luck Emily!
