Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest Extended Until 1 January 2015

The Ely American Legion is sponsoring the Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest. The Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest will help youth develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the United States flag and teach proper etiquette and respect for the flag. All local fifth graders are encouraged to submit entries. The local first place winner will receive a $20 prize and will have their entry forwarded for District and State level competition. The local second place winner will receive a $10 prize. Other prizes are available at the District and State levels of competition.

Eligibility: Participants must be citizens of or lawful residents of the United States. All contestants must be students enrolled in the fifth grade in a public, parochial, military, private, or state accredited home-school program.

Essay: The written essay will be no more than 300 words and will be limited to one full page, double-spaced, typewritten, 12-pitch, and an original effort of the contestant. The subject will be a personal interpretation of what the United States flag represents to the individual, based on facts from the United States Flag Code http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html. Word or Adobe format may be used.

Contest: A copy of this letter with the bottom portion completed must accompany each essay. Contestants may submit essays to legionessay@elylegion.com or mail entries to Post 555, 1545 Main Street, Ely, Iowa 52227. Entries must be received no later than November 1, 2014 to allow adequate time for judging. American Legion Post 555 will notify winning contests of results.
